Etymology

Borrowed from Spanish vainilla, literally "little pod" — a diminutive of vaina ("pod" or "sheath"), referring to the shape of the vanilla bean. The figurative sense of "plain" or "basic" grew out of vanilla being the default, unadorned ice cream flavor.
