Etymology

From Middle French coronnel, from Italian colonnello ("commander of a column of soldiers"), from Latin columna ("column, pillar"). The English spelling was later changed to match the Italian, but the older "r" pronunciation stuck, which is why "colonel" is pronounced like "kernel."
